Undergraduate students are always encouraged to apply for a position\u00a0as a research assistant for the Social Cognitive Development (SCD) Lab. The SCD Lab<\/span>\u00a0is committed to providing the best research experience for students. We\u2019re interested\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0work<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0with students\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span> all levels (Undergraduate<\/a><\/span> and<\/span>\u00a0Graduate<\/a><\/span>\u00a0students<\/span>).\u00a0<\/span>All research assistants will be trained on the processes of recruitment,\u00a0the conducting of\u00a0experiment procedures, data analysis, along with the\u00a0dissemination process of the\u00a0experiment outcomes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The training and experience in the SCD Lab\u00a0<\/span>emphasize<\/span>\u00a0both\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>theoretical understanding of the field and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>rigorous methods for conducting psychological research.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Note<\/span><\/i>:\u00a0<\/span>If you are interested in receiving credit for the work that you would do in this lab, you would enroll in\u00a0<\/span>PSYC 391 (Pass\/Fail) or PSYC 392 (Letter grade). You would be encouraged to sign up for either 2 (6 hours\/week) or 3 (9 hours\/week) credit hours<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0You must receive approval from Dr.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Youjung<\/strong>\u00a0Choi before enrolling in her section.<\/strong> You can contact her at youjung.ch<\/a><\/span>oi1@siu.edu<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Graduate students (especially those in the\u00a0Brain and Cognitive Sciences program at SIU) are encouraged to apply for a position at the SCD Lab.\u00a0Graduate students will be trained on the processes of recruitment, the conducting of experiment procedures, data analysis, along with the dissemination process of the experiment outcomes. Graduate students will also\u00a0<\/span>have the opportunity to<\/span>\u00a0take the lead on some of their own studies under the supervision\u00a0of Dr.\u00a0<\/span>Youjung<\/span>\u00a0Choi. This would also be a great opportunity to\u00a0conduct research for your thesis and\/or your dissertation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What does a typical study look like at the SCD Lab?<\/b><\/span><\/h5>

Our research primarily involves working with children who range from\u00a0the age of\u00a0<\/span>3 months<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>13 years old<\/span>. Here is an example of the procedures for one of our studies:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  1. We check in the child and his\/her caregiver in the waiting room. Here, they will fill out any necessary paperwork before we may proceed with the study.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  2. The child will be escorted into a lab space and seated in front of a small stage, TV monitor, or seated with an experimenter.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0*Note<\/em>:<\/em> Depending on the child\u2019s age, the caregiver may need to have the child be seated on their lap throughout the study.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  3. The experimenters will administer the stimuli to the participant. This may be through the form of a puppet show, a video,\u00a0<\/span>storytelling,\u00a0<\/span>or through the distribution of toys.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  4. During the administration of the stimuli, the child\u2019s reactions and behaviors will be\u00a0captured live through cameras that are placed around the lab space. Experimenters will observe these\u00a0live\u00a0reactions\/behaviors and code them\u00a0accordingly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  5. Once the\u00a0administration is complete,\u00a0an experimenter will debrief the caregiver of the child about the experiment and then\u00a0escort them out of the lab space. The experiment would then be\u00a0complete.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ol>
